French Drain Installation in Weatherford and Parker County
A French drain is a gravel filled trench with a perforated pipe in the bottom that collects water moving through the soil and along the surface, then carries it to a lower point where it can leave the property. On Cross Timbers ground west of Fort Worth, the design question is rarely whether a drain would help. It is how deep anyone can actually get before the trench hits rock.
What a French drain actually does
Water in a yard travels two ways: across the surface, and through the soil profile just below it. A French drain intercepts both. Water enters the gravel, drops to the perforated pipe, and runs downhill inside that pipe to a discharge point. The gravel is the collector, the pipe is the conveyor, and filter fabric keeps fine sandy soil and silt from working into the aggregate and plugging it.
Three things decide whether the finished drain works: enough fall to keep water moving, an outfall low enough to actually receive that water, and a trench positioned where the water is traveling rather than where the puddle happens to show. The puddle is often downhill of the real problem.
Why Parker County changes the design
Weatherford sits in the Western Cross Timbers, where soils formed on sandy Cretaceous strata over limestones, sandstones and shales, with the Glen Rose Limestone and Paluxy Sand both present in the area. Soils here vary within a few dozen feet: sandy in one part of a lot, clay in another, shallow and rocky somewhere else, and caliche in a fourth spot. Ground is undulating to hilly, roughly 700 to 1,200 feet in elevation, and the soils are predominantly alkaline.
The practical consequence is that a textbook trench depth is often unavailable. A crew may reach twelve or sixteen inches and be standing on limestone. That is not a failure of the plan, it is the site. A good design accepts the real depth and compensates by adjusting route, length, aggregate volume and surface grading, rather than pretending deeper is possible.
How a typical installation proceeds
- Walk the lot during or right after rain if possible, or read the evidence: silt lines, matted grass, moss, algae, and the shape of the low spots.
- Probe or test dig at several points along the proposed line to learn where rock or caliche starts. Depth to rock frequently changes across a single run.
- Confirm the outfall. Daylighting to a lower grade, a ditch, a swale or an approved storm connection has to exist, and the pipe has to reach it with continuous fall.
- Excavate the trench, cutting rock where required, and shape a consistent slope in the trench bottom.
- Line the trench with filter fabric, bed clean washed aggregate, set perforated pipe, cap with more aggregate, and wrap the fabric closed.
- Backfill and restore the surface, whether that means sod, seed, decomposed granite or a gravel top where the drain is meant to take surface water directly.
Where drains commonly go on local lots
Uphill of the house on a sloping lot, to intercept water before it reaches the slab. Along a fence line where a neighboring property sheds water across the boundary. Across the toe of a slope where water surfaces and stays. Around a patio or driveway edge where hardscape concentrates runoff into turf. On newer subdivision lots built on cut and filled rocky ground, drains often follow the seam between undisturbed native material and imported fill, because that seam is frequently where water runs.
Pipe, fabric and aggregate choices
Rigid perforated pipe holds its shape and its slope better than corrugated flexible pipe, and it is easier to clean later. Clean washed rock matters more than most owners expect, because crusher fines and dirty aggregate silt in quickly. Non woven filter fabric suits the sandier Cross Timbers soils, while heavier duty fabric is used where the trench passes under a drive or another loaded surface. Where the drain is picking up gutter discharge or a hardscape inlet, solid pipe carries that volume separately so it does not simply flood the perforated section.
Realistic expectations
A French drain moves water that reaches it. It does not lower a water table, and it does not fix a yard whose surface slopes toward the house unless surface grading is corrected as well. On shallow rock lots, drains are usually part of a combination: a shallower than ideal drain, plus regrading, plus catch basins where the ground genuinely cannot be opened. That combination is normal here, and it is not a compromise so much as the correct response to the geology.
Every property is different. A contractor who probes for rock before quoting, explains what depth is achievable, and shows you where the water is going to end up is giving you the information you need to judge the plan.
